Down the Rabbit-Hole: A forensic analysis of the Matrix protocol and Synapse server

Here we go, a very interesting topic to present at DFRWS EU.

The origin story is quite intriguing. The suspect, a college student, spent his free time hacking into a gaming company and leaking unreleased game characters and other assets.

He ran both his blog and communication server from a home router, using Cloudflare’s free tunnel service. With almost zero cost, he built a chat platform based on the Matrix protocol, using the open-source Element client and Synapse server.

At the Forensic Institute, we are always learning from talented individuals like this. Inspired by his setup, we deployed our own Synapse server for internal communication. It has proven to be secure, cost-effective, and quick to implement.
